Amit R. Majithia, MD is an endocrinologist and physician-scientist at UC San Diego whose work uses human genetics, functional genomics, and multi-omic data to discover mechanisms and therapeutic targets for insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cardiometabolic disease. His laboratory combines large-scale genetic discovery with experimental systems to identify disease genes, understand their biological function, and translate those insights toward precision diabetes care.

Dr. Majithia is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Vice Chair of Research for the division, and a physician at the VA San Diego Healthcare System. He received his BA in Chemistry and Physics from Harvard University and his MD from NYU School of Medicine, then completed internal medicine residency and endocrinology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by postdoctoral training at the Broad Institute.

At UC San Diego, Dr. Majithia is a member of the teaching faculty in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program, Bioinformatics and Systems Biology Program, and Genetics Training Program, and is affiliated with the Division of Biomedical Informatics. He also directs the Training Program in Experimental Endocrinology and Metabolism and co-directs the UCSD and Rady Children’s Health-San Diego NORD Center of Excellence for Rare Disorders.
